Day #271 - Consecration
The Presence - A Devotional for Living in Thanksgiving, Worship and Wonder
“Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. And you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, on his sons and on the garments of his sons with him; and he and his garments shall be hallowed, and his sons and his sons’ garments with him.”
Exodus 29:20-21 NKJV
Do you have something set apart in your house for special days?
When I was growing up my Mom had a special plate that she put out for our birthdays. It was set apart for whoever was the birthday boy or birthday girl. In fact, the plate said “you are special today” and it was bright red. Getting the read plate meant that I was first in line for my special birthday meal, which was always important to me and actually did make me feel special.
As priests, Aaron and his sons, were not only to wear the right garments, they were to be consecrated or set apart for their service. The priestly garments had deep and beautiful meaning. They were anointed with oil and prepared in several steps to be ready for service. I want to draw attention to the part of the consecration that had to do with the application of blood. The priests were to have the blood of a lamb (the ram) applied to their right ear, their right thumb and their right big toe.
A priest needed blood applied to them to be ready for holy service. The blood applied to the ear represents the need for a priest to be consecrated to hear the voice of God. The blood applied to the right thumb represents the need for a priest to have his ministry work consecrated. And the blood applied to the right big toe represents the need for the priest to have his walk with God consecrated.
This is true for the believer as a priest in the New Covenant as well. We need the blood of Jesus to set us apart in our relationship with God (our hearing His voice). We need the blood of Jesus to to set us apart in our ministry to God and others (the work of our hands). And we need the blood of Jesus to set us apart in our lifestyle (the walk with our feet). The blood of Jesus is applied not only to our souls to save us from our sin but also to consecrate for life and ministry in “the Presence.”
Let us apply the power of the blood of Jesus to our hearing, our hands and our feet. May God cleanse our motives, our efforts and our steps to bring glory and honor to Him. Pray these song lyrics today:
Thank You Jesus for the blood applied
Thank You Jesus, it has washed me white
Thank You Jesus, You have saved my life
Brought me from the darkness into glorious light
Glory to His name
Glory to His name
There to my heart was the blood applied
Glory to His name 1
Amen.
