Day #125 - Hovering
The Presence - A Devotional for living in Thanksgiving, Worship and Wonder
“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Genesis 1:2 NIV
Have you ever seen life come from the dead or order come from chaos?
When my wife hovers around the house, she brings order out of chaos. That woman can whip our house into shape and motivate us all to do the same. She makes a messy room clean and adds beauty where it is lacking. She makes our house a home. She has an incredible ability to make life more vibrant.
In the beginning of the creation of the world I always imagined that God the Father was the Creator of the world solely, but the creation was actually a work of our Triune God. Right after we read, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1),” we learn the earth was formless, dark and empty. But the Spirit of God was hovering over its waters. The Holy Spirit is Creator and He is creative.
He hovered over the chaos of the unformed earth and brought life and order to it. This is the first time the Holy Spirit is mentioned in the Scripture. The first mention principle in Theology teaches that the first mention of something contains a truth that carries throughout the rest of the Bible on that given topic. The hovering of the Holy Spirit is a characteristic of His work throughout the Scriptures and of His work in our lives.
Throughout the Bible the Holy Spirit would “come upon” or “hover” over places, individuals and groups of people. In fact, when we experience the manifest presence of God, we are experiencing the hovering of the Holy Spirit. When He comes upon us we sense His order, life, power and creativity.
I’ve had many precious experiences where the Holy Spirit came and hovered upon me. These are the times where He brings something out of darkness and grief that is beautiful and redemptive. Holy Spirit encounters cause me to know that God is near and new life springs fourth in my purpose and calling.
Invite the Spirit of God to hover upon your life, receive His power and let Him move you how He desires.
Holy Spirit, I invite you hover upon my life. Bring order, life and creativity out of the places that seem formless or void in my life. You make the difference in my life. I need Your power, Your touch and Your presence. I love the way You come upon me. In Jesus name, amen.

Everything the Holy Spirit does fills me with wonder. He makes me thankful and glad to worship. 🕊✝❤ To live in His Presence and Glory is the greatest gift, and I pray for those who need to draw near Him and have their lives changed, once and for all!
WOW!!! All I can say is yes and amen! Was brought to tears again. Thank you for writing these (and really like the picture today. Beautiful!)
